Rules

Teams/Players
  1. The tournament has a bracketed format.  Teams are guaranteed 2 games.  Depending on time, there may not be games to determine 3rd place or consolation.
  2. Teams (men, women, boys, and girls) will consist of three players, with no more than four.  Co-ed teams may have up to five players.
  3. Players may play on only one team.
  4.    If there are fewer than 4 teams in a division, teams will be placed in comparable division.
  5. Availability is based on a first-come first-serve basis. No more than 8 teams in any one bracket, 24 total HS/Adult teams.  Teams must register by March 13, 2022.  The fee is $40 per team.
  6. Teams should check in on tournament day 30 minutes before their first scheduled game.  After March 12, teams will be able to access their game times via stjohns3on3.com.  Team captains must notify their own teammates of start time.
  7. Clean, appropriate athletic shoes must be worn.  Game balls provided.  If you bring warm-up ball(s), please mark with name and phone number.
  8. Tournament directors and people from St. John’s are not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Play/Sportsmanship
  1. Teams must be at their assigned court at the scheduled game time. A five minute forfeit rule will be enforced.
  2. All games can start and end with any number of players on the court (1, 2 or 3).
  3. Initial ball possession determined by a coin toss.  Jump balls will be alternate possession with the loser of the coin toss taking the next possession.
  4. Possession will change after each score. Upon a possession change, the offensive team must allow the defensive team to ‘check’ the ball at the head of the circle beyond the 3-point line. Failure to take it back to the line will result in loss of possession and any points scored on that possession.
  5. After ‘checking’ the ball, the offensive player must pass the ball in to a teammate. You may not dribble the ball into play.  First violation will result in a warning.  Any future violations will result in possession changes.
  6. When the defensive team gets the ball by either a steal or rebound, they must take the ball behind the three-point line at any point before attacking the basket on offense.
  7. There will be no lane violations; no 3 seconds in the key.
  8. Player substitution is permitted during any dead-ball situation.
  9. Each team will be allowed one 30 second time out. The clock does not stop running. A time out will not be permitted    during the last 2 minutes of the game.
  10. An official will be assigned to Elementary and Middle games to call fouls, violations and control the game.  High School/Adult players will self-officiate, unless an official is deemed necessary by tournament supervisors, in which case an official will be assigned.
  11. Fouls will be called by the court official (except in High School/Adult division). Players will be allowed up to 5 fouls per game.  The ball will be taken out by the appropriate team.  On the seventh team foul, and there after, the offended team will receive one point and possession of the ball. Severe incidents or flagrant fouls will result in player ejection for the remainder of the game and possibly the tournament.
  12. No trash talking, taunting, swearing, fighting, or abusing school property will be permitted. Each team will be given one warning. The next time will result in the team forfeiting the game and possible dismissal from the tournament.
  13. Remember GOOD SPORTS ARE WINNERS.

Games/Scoring
  1. Winners will be the first team to score 15 points with a two point advantage.
  2. Games will have a 15 minute time limit. The team ahead at that time will be declared the winner.  If teams are tied, a free throw shoot-out will determine the winner.
  3. A field goal counts as one point.
  4. A goal from behind the 3-point arc is worth two points.  The player shooting must have both feet completely behind the line when initiating the attempt.
  5.  First place and second place teams in each division will receive awards.
